Tips for a Pulled Muscle

Each time you exercise, you slowly break down your muscles, creating tiny tears in the muscle fabric. After time, these tiny tears rebuild, leading to additional muscle strength. When you work out too hard, however, you may cause more damage to the muscle than you intended. This creates the sensation of a “pulled” muscle.

When you’re dealing with a pulled muscle, it’s important that you help it heal correctly. While most muscle pulls are harmless, if your muscles experience repeated strain, they could become permanently damaged. You should work hard to facilitate a good healing environment for your pulled muscle.

There are a number of ways you can treat a pulled muscle. It’s always advisable to consult with a doctor or physiotherapist in Brampton if you’re experiencing muscle pain. They can help you identify the best course of treatment, and help you ensure that your muscle heals properly. Obtaining muscle therapy is a great way to get back up on your feet and start working out again as quickly as possible:

  • Ice, elevate and compress: The first thing you should do after suffering a muscle injury is get the injured muscle up above your head as quickly as possible. Once it’s elevated, compress it and apply ice. This will reduce swelling and pain, and prevent blood from pooling around the torn muscle.
  • Suffer through the pain: If it’s at all possible, you should avoid commercial painkillers. While they may offer temporary relief, most over-the-counter pain medication also reduces swelling. Swelling is a natural part of the muscle healing process, and stopping it may adversely affect the way that your muscle heals. If you absolutely need to take painkillers, do so sparingly.
  • Keep an eye on bruising: Check on your turn muscle every few hours. If bruising begins to develop, your muscle tear may be more serious than you initially thought. If bruising appears, it means that the muscle tear is so severe that the muscle is actually bleeding into your body. This usually means that you should visit a doctor or physical therapist as soon as possible.
  • Lay low: One of the best ways that you can help a torn muscle recover is also the simplest: take it easy. As much as possible, avoid any strenuous activity that activates the damaged muscle. If it’s helpful, consider keeping the affected muscle wrapped or in a splint. Anything that you can do to minimize movement will help the muscle recover more quickly.
